Digital India: Transforming the Nation

Eleven years after its launch on 1 July 2015, Digital India stands as one of the most ambitious and consequential public technology programmes in the world. Conceived to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy, it has delivered results at a scale few nations have matched. My considered view is that it has genuinely transformed the nation in foundational ways—especially in financial inclusion, welfare delivery, and the creation of open Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)—while still falling short of full, equitable empowerment. The achievements are real and impressive. The gaps in quality of access, digital capability, privacy safeguards, and cyber resilience remain substantial.
