After experiencing its misty mountain roads, peaceful lakes, colourful monasteries, clean public places, welcoming markets, family activities and rapidly changing weather, our answer is clear: yes, Sikkim deserves a place among India’s finest travel destinations.
Sikkim is not impressive because of one famous attraction. Its real strength is the combination of natural beauty, cultural diversity, spiritual importance, adventure, cleanliness and an atmosphere that encourages visitors to slow down and appreciate their surroundings.

The Journey to Gangtok: Long, Unpredictable and Worth It
Our journey began with an early flight to Bagdogra Airport, followed by a road journey towards Gangtok. Travellers should be prepared for a long transfer. Mountain distances are better measured in hours than kilometres, and traffic or changing road conditions can extend the journey.
Our arrival day included congestion, rain and even an unexpected road accident involving another vehicle travelling with our group. Fortunately, everyone was safe, but the incident was a reminder that patience and responsible driving are essential in mountain regions.
Once the plains began changing into green slopes and winding roads, the tiredness gradually became less important. The journey itself became part of the holiday.
Our Most Memorable Places in Sikkim
1 Gangtok: Comfort Surrounded by Mountains
Gangtok is an excellent base for exploring Sikkim. It offers comfortable hotels, restaurants, markets and access to major attractions while still retaining the charm of a Himalayan hill city.
The view from our hotel changed continuously. At one moment, mountains and houses were clearly visible; minutes later, clouds and rain covered the entire landscape. Watching the weather from the room became an attraction in itself.
2 Tsomgo Lake: A Landscape That Looks Painted
The journey towards Tsomgo Lake, also commonly called Changu Lake, passes through steep mountains, waterfalls, mist and beautiful green valleys.
The lake rests quietly between the mountains and feels almost perfectly placed within the landscape. Even without snow, it was one of the most beautiful locations of our journey. It is easy to imagine how extraordinary the entire valley must look when covered in white.
3 Nathu La Pass: Scenic, Emotional and Challenging
Nathu La offers more than a mountain view. The proximity of the international border, the presence of the Indian Army and the challenging high-altitude environment make the experience emotional as well as scenic.
The cold becomes intense, breathing may feel more difficult and even a short climb can be tiring. Visitors should move slowly, follow local guidance and avoid treating a high-altitude visit like an ordinary city attraction.
4 Ravangla and Buddha Park: Beauty With Silence
Ravangla introduced us to the calmer and more spiritual side of Sikkim. Buddha Park is centred around a towering Buddha statue, landscaped grounds and beautifully detailed artwork.
During our visit, clouds gradually surrounded the complex until parts of the statue and nearby structures became difficult to see. Instead of spoiling the visit, the mist made the entire setting feel even more dramatic and peaceful.
5 Namchi Char Dham: Multiple Traditions in One Journey
Namchi’s Char Dham complex brings together representations associated with major Hindu pilgrimage destinations. It gives families an opportunity to experience devotional architecture, open spaces and several temple structures within one planned complex.
This stop added another dimension to our Sikkim journey. After visiting lakes, border areas and Buddhist sites, Namchi showed how different religious traditions coexist within the state.
6 Temi Tea Garden: A Different Shade of Green
Temi Tea Garden offers a peaceful change after long drives and busy sightseeing. Rows of tea plants follow the slopes of the hills, creating beautiful natural patterns across the landscape.
It is an ideal location for relaxed walks, family photographs and a closer look at the agricultural side of Sikkim. The open setting also gives children space to explore after spending several hours inside a vehicle.
7 Banjhakri Falls: Nature With Family Activities
Banjhakri Falls combines natural beauty with family-friendly entertainment. The waterfall is surrounded by green landscapes, traditional design features, shops and activity areas.
The children particularly enjoyed the adventure activities, including rides and zip-lining. This made Banjhakri Falls one of the most energetic and interactive stops of the trip.
8 Himalayan Zoological Park: Wildlife in Mountain Terrain
The Himalayan Zoological Park feels different from a compact city zoo. It involves walking through sloping terrain, and the animals may not always be immediately visible—particularly during rain.
Searching for animals became part of the experience. Spotting Himalayan wildlife, especially the red panda, created genuine excitement among the children.
9 MG Marg: The Social Heart of Gangtok
MG Marg is the ideal place to end a full sightseeing day. The pedestrian-friendly surroundings allow families to walk, shop, eat and relax without constantly worrying about traffic.
Children can browse toys and gifts, adults can explore local products and everyone can spend an unhurried evening together. Its appeal comes from the complete atmosphere rather than one individual monument.
Cleanliness May Be Sikkim’s Greatest Strength
Many Indian destinations are naturally beautiful, but poorly managed litter can reduce the experience. Sikkim stood out because its natural surroundings generally appeared to be respected and protected.
We became more conscious of collecting wrappers and other waste inside the vehicle instead of allowing anything to be thrown outside. A clean destination encourages visitors to behave more responsibly.
This culture of cleanliness is not a small cosmetic advantage. It improves the beauty of the destination, protects the ecosystem and makes families feel more comfortable while travelling.
Sikkim’s Weather Is Unpredictable—and That Is Part of the Experience
One of the most repeated experiences during our journey was the speed at which the weather changed. Sunshine could disappear within minutes. Clear views could be replaced by rain, mist or thick cloud before we had time to complete a photograph.
On some mountain roads, visibility became extremely limited. At other times, it felt as though we were driving through the clouds rather than merely looking at them.
Such weather can interrupt plans, but it also produces some of Sikkim’s most memorable scenes. Clouds moving across valleys, monasteries disappearing into mist and mountains reappearing after rain give the state a constantly changing personality.
