Is Sikkim One of the Best Destinations to Visit in India? My Honest Family Travel Experience
After visiting Sikkim with my family, I genuinely feel that it is one of India’s most beautiful and peaceful holiday destinations. The long mountain journeys can be tiring, especially for travellers affected by motion sickness, but the clean cities, calm people, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, clouds and extraordinary landscapes make the experience truly memorable.
Travel Dates
A five-day family journey from 27 June to 1 July, covering Gangtok, Nathula, Ravangla and nearby attractions.
Route Covered
Delhi, Bagdogra, Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, Nathula Pass, Ravangla, Chardham and the Teesta River route.
Overall Experience
Beautiful nature, clean cities, peaceful roads, polite people, refreshing weather and unforgettable mountain landscapes.
Why Sikkim Left Such a Strong Impression on Me
Sikkim offers much more than a collection of tourist attractions. It gives travellers an opportunity to slow down, breathe fresh mountain air and observe nature closely.
Throughout our journey, we saw clouds moving across the mountains, roadside waterfalls, flower-decorated homes, green valleys, quiet roads and the flowing Teesta River. These small, natural experiences made the holiday feel more meaningful than ordinary sightseeing.
At the same time, mountain travel requires patience. The roads are long and winding, and motion sickness can affect both children and adults. For our family, however, Sikkim’s beauty made the difficult parts of the journey worthwhile.
Starting Our Journey from Delhi to Bagdogra and Gangtok
We started our journey on the morning of 27 June, travelling from Delhi to Bagdogra by air. After reaching Bagdogra Airport, we hired an Innova Crysta. Our driver, Mr. Arvind Pradhan, picked us up at approximately 9:50 AM.
From Bagdogra, we began the road journey towards Gangtok. The route was scenic, but the combination of motion sickness, a lunch break, sightseeing and photography made the journey longer. We eventually reached Gangtok at around 6 PM.
Although it was a tiring day, the first views of Sikkim’s mountains, greenery, drifting clouds and fresh surroundings immediately created excitement for the days ahead.
First impression: Even before reaching Gangtok, the mountain scenery, greenery and constantly changing clouds made the road journey feel like an important part of the holiday.
Our Hotel Experience in Gangtok
First Stay: Sumitel Shangrila Gangtok
We stayed for one day at Sumitel Shangrila Gangtok. Overall, the hotel was satisfactory, and the morning balcony view was extremely peaceful. Watching hills and clouds from the balcony was a beautiful way to begin the day.
However, because of the non-availability of air conditioning and some food-related concerns, we decided to move to another hotel the following day.

Moving to Hotel Udaan Gangtok
After leaving Sumitel Shangrila, we transferred our luggage to Hotel Udaan Gangtok. It offered air-conditioned rooms, pure vegetarian food and a pleasant restaurant, which made the stay more comfortable for our family.
The view from the hotel window was another highlight. In the morning, the combination of clouds, hills and cool weather created the peaceful holiday atmosphere we had expected from Sikkim.

Gangtok to Nathula Pass via Tsomgo Lake
The next day, we left Gangtok at around 10 AM for Nathula Pass, travelling via Tsomgo Lake. This route was one of the most scenic parts of our entire Sikkim trip.
Small waterfalls appeared repeatedly along the road. The landscape was green and open, while clouds and rain made the surrounding mountains look fresh and dramatic.
The Beauty of Tsomgo Lake
Tsomgo Lake was beautiful. The cold weather, cloudy surroundings, mountain atmosphere and calm water created a distinctive experience. It was one of those places where the surroundings felt more impressive than any photograph could fully capture.
Our Nathula Pass Experience
Nathula Pass was equally memorable. During our visit, we had to begin our return journey early because visitor movement was closing at around 2 PM.

Mountain Clouds on the Gangtok–Nathula Route
A remarkable mountain moment: During the return journey, some sections of the road were completely surrounded by dark clouds. Visibility became extremely low, but after travelling only a short distance, the clouds suddenly opened and revealed beautiful landscapes again. This constantly changing mountain atmosphere was one of the most fascinating parts of the trip.
We had also planned to visit Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, but decided not to continue because my son was experiencing motion sickness. We returned to Hotel Udaan, spent some time talking with friends and went to bed early.
29 June: Buddha Park of Ravangla and Chardham
On 29 June, we started our journey towards the Buddha Park of Ravangla, also known as Tathagata Tsal.
The drive itself was beautiful. We stopped to take photographs of mountain landscapes, small waterfalls, local homes and flower decorations. One detail that repeatedly caught my attention was how many homes along the route were decorated with colourful flowers. These small touches made the roads and neighbourhoods look especially charming.
Buddha Park was peaceful, spacious and visually impressive. We visited the temple, enjoyed the surroundings, ate Maggi and momos, and did some shopping for the children.
After Buddha Park, we continued to Chardham, which was another attractive and worthwhile place to visit.
A Peaceful Tea Garden Experience
On the return route, we visited a tea garden. The green plantation, cool weather, quiet environment and natural sound of crickets created a completely different atmosphere. The sound of crickets could be heard across several parts of the route and became one of the most memorable natural details of our journey.

This was an excellent day. After returning to the hotel, we took a shower, had dinner and later walked around the nearby area. The evening felt calm, safe and refreshing.
30 June: Banjhakri Falls, Gangtok Zoo, Mall Road and Spa
On 30 June, we planned a day of local sightseeing around Gangtok, including Banjhakri Falls, the zoo, Mall Road and a spa session in the evening.
Banjhakri Falls
Banjhakri Falls is an attractive waterfall and a pleasant family destination. However, because of the extensive development and man-made structures around it, the place did not feel like a completely untouched natural waterfall.
Even so, families and children can enjoy the location. Activities such as ziplining also add an element of adventure.

A Rare Red Panda Moment at Gangtok Zoo
After Banjhakri Falls, we visited the zoo near Gangtok. It felt more natural than a typical crowded city zoo because the surroundings had a forest-like character.
The most special moment was seeing a red panda. It was a rare and beautiful experience, particularly because the animal was sitting naturally among tree branches and green leaves.

Mall Road
After visiting the zoo, we returned to Mall Road, enjoyed evening tea and snacks, and experienced the local market atmosphere.
A Relaxing Evening
Later, we returned to the hotel, enjoyed a spa session, had dinner, talked with friends and ended the day peacefully.
1 July: Return Journey Along the Teesta River
On the morning of 1 July, we began our return journey from Gangtok to Bagdogra Airport for our flight to Delhi.
The route remained beautiful, and a major part of the road ran beside the Teesta River. In several stretches, the river view was extraordinary. The flowing water, green slopes, mountains and road running alongside the valley made the return journey memorable.

We reached Bagdogra Airport at approximately 2 PM and arrived back in Delhi at around 7 PM.
After several days of continuous travel, I was understandably tired. However, after reaching home and resting, I felt that the journey had been completely worthwhile.
So, Is Sikkim One of the Best Destinations in India?
In my opinion, yes. Sikkim deserves to be considered one of India’s best travel destinations, especially for people who love mountains, rivers, clouds, waterfalls, quiet roads and clean natural surroundings.
It is not merely a place for conventional sightseeing. Sikkim gives travellers the opportunity to observe nature in its everyday form: small roadside waterfalls, clouds moving over mountains, tea gardens filled with natural sounds, beautiful houses decorated with flowers, calm communities and clean urban areas.
Mountain travel can be tiring, and motion sickness is a genuine consideration for some travellers. Nevertheless, anyone interested in exploring natural beauty and experiencing a peaceful side of India should seriously consider visiting Sikkim.

My Final Feeling After Returning Home
After returning home, I felt relaxed. Home provides real rest, but travel creates lasting memories.
Sikkim gave us beautiful landscapes, peaceful moments, valuable family time, natural sounds, clouds, waterfalls, river views and many small experiences that will remain in our memories for years.
The most memorable part of Sikkim was not one individual attraction. It was the complete combination of mountain roads, changing weather, natural sounds, family time and the feeling of discovering something beautiful around almost every corner.
A Special Thanks to Our Driver, Mr. Arvind Pradhan
I would also like to specially mention Mr. Arvind Pradhan, who drove us throughout our Sikkim visit and helped make the journey comfortable and memorable. He is a kind, humble and patient person.
In addition to driving safely through the mountain roads, he helped us take family photographs and videos at several beautiful locations. These thoughtful gestures made our travel experience even more special.
My child experienced motion sickness during the trip, and Mr. Arvind handled the situation patiently and supportively. He never appeared irritated or inconvenienced, which our family genuinely appreciated.
